Dieter was born in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany, the son of
Dr. Ernst August Hauser. Escaping the political climate of Nazi
Germany, the Hauser's settled in Massachusetts and Dieter joined
the U.S. Marine Corps in 1944, serving in the South Pacific. Honorably
discharged in 1946, he remained in the Marine Corps Reserves until
1960.
Dieter's father Ernst was born in Vienna in 1896 and served
in the Austro-Hungarian Army during World War I with the Field
Artillery and later as an officer in the Mountain Troops (Gebirgsjägern).
